Linear Systems with Cars

Grade 10 Applied Math students enjoyed their data-collecting trip to Upper James Toyota and John Bear Hamilton.

The class will be using their knowledge of linear systems in order to analyze the costs associated with purchasing and operating a new vehicle with a diesel, hybrid, or electric engine and compare that to a gasoline engine. We will model the costs of each engine type with a linear equation, solve the linear system, and interpret the solution in a way that is meaningful for car shoppers.

The results of the comparison will be offered back to the dealerships and will illustrate potential buyers.

The students are producing information flyers that outline the results of the comparison. Posters outlining the information will also be created that can be displayed for other students to see.
