Hockey Road Trip
The Hamilton District Christian High Hockey Team traveled to play in a tournament in Grand Rapids MI.
After a slow border crossing, the team bus rolled into the arena parking lot just in time for their first game – the Zamboni was already on the ice.
The players got their legs going quickly and won a tight game 2-1 vs. Toronto District Christian High (TDCH). Both teams then headed to Calvin College to have supper together, after which they met their billets for both nights.
After breakfast on Friday, students learned more about Calvin College, they attended chapel, walked around the campus, toured the Phys Ed complex and had a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, they went to the rink and watched TDCH take on GRCHS (Grand Rapids Christian High School), then headed back to Calvin for an early supper before their game against Forest Hills Central.
The first period was tight, but then FHC pulled away in the final two periods throwing 50+ shots at HDs net. The team stayed at the rink and watched Calvin’s D3 team play against Schoolcraft before heading back to campus for the night.
The injury and the call-up
On Saturday morning, the group met for breakfast in the dining hall, packed up their gear and said farewell and thanks to the billet families and headed to the rink for a rematch with TDCH. Hamilton District Christian High built up a three-goal lead before goalie, Trevor DeVries got injured in the third period. Joseph VanderWoerd, a call-up for the trip, came off a two-year hockey hiatus to finish up the game, securing an 8-4 victory. After, the team packed up their gear and headed back east, arriving safely back at HD later that evening.
